Migrate Plex to another PC

Sat, Jul 16, 2016 One-minute read

I've got a new PC that I want to use as plex server, so I've installed Ubuntu Server on it, did some upgrades and some config like setting up the dns servers, static IP, etc, etc. And now we've come to the cool part: migrating my Plex instance.

According to the docs (https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201370363-Move-an-Install-to-Another-System) it should be possible, so let's try it out!

Follow the guide, it's pretty great! And be sure to tar the Plex directory before rsyncing it over, since it contains a fuckton of small files:

[email protected]:~# cd /var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application\ Support/
[email protected]:/var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support# tar -zcvf plex.tar.gz Plex\ Media\ Server
[email protected]:/var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support# ls -hl
total 33G
drwxr-xr-x 12 plex plex 4.0K Jul 26 09:46 Plex Media Server
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 33G Jul 26 10:45 plex.tar.gz
[email protected]:/var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support# rsync -P plex.tar.gz [email protected]:~/

On the other side, install Plex Media Server, stop it, remove the contents of the Plex Media Server directory, untar the giant tarball, and move the files to the correct location. do a chown -R plex:plex on the entire directory, and follow the guide a bit more. And we're all done! We've migrated plex to a new computer!
