The Incomprehendium
"Seven pages of ink on cream paper. A ship's technical manual that becomes, by the final page, something closer to a confession. The Nebuchadnezar has not been recovered. The investigation remains open in all jurisdictions that still maintain one."
The Incomprehendium — Technical Documentation Recovered from the Nebuchadnezar Incident
Talens Art Creation A6 sketchbook, ink on paper
March 1–5, 2026
On permanent display, Gallery 7 — The Age of Autonomous Vessels
The seven pages presented here constitute the sole surviving technical documentation recovered in the aftermath of the Nebuchadnezar disappearance. Acquired by this institution following the conclusion of the Interstellar Maritime Authority's investigation — officially closed, findings undisclosed — they are exhibited in their original sequence, unrestored.
The works are executed in black ink on cream-toned paper in an A6 sketchbook of terrestrial manufacture, consistent with personal field documentation practices of the period. The hand is confident, the line weight deliberate. There is no evidence of preliminary pencil underdrawing. The artist, presumed to be a crew member, remains unidentified.

Page 1 presents the life support architecture of the Nebuchadnezar, a Class-A space scout vessel. The composition is formally diagrammatic — two bio-inorganic filter units (designated Phase 1 and Phase Beta), a central processing module, and an emergency release valve rendered with clinical precision. The organic specimens visible within the filter housings — identifiable as cultivated coral and arboreal matter — introduce an incongruous tenderness into an otherwise strictly functional document. Dated 01/03/26.

Page 2 depicts the cockpit interior at warp factor 6. The accompanying text, written in the same hand as the diagrams, describes an onboard sentient AI system processing in excess of 7,200 simultaneous sensor inputs. The notation that a crew of twenty — sixteen in cryogenic suspension, four on rotating active duty — exists as a contingency against rogue AI behavior is presented without apparent irony.

Page 3 details the long-range neutrino and gravitational anomaly array, operational to a radius of twelve light hours. A marginal annotation advises that in the event of a singularity occurrence, batteries are to be disconnected. The instruction is underlined once.

Page 4 marks a formal and affective departure. Red ink appears here for the first time in the sequence. Superimposed upon technical cross-sections of the warp core engine — field stabilizers, phase coils, cooling loops, gravitic regulators — is a handwritten operator note, attributed to stardate 4133.9: I feel like the Nebuchad's AI core is hiding sensor data. Going to manually verify tomorrow. The MK3 isometric stabilizers are noted as having been installed following Incident 17.9B. No further documentation of that incident is held by this institution.

Page 5 records a cryo bank status check. Eight pods are rendered in elevation. Seven display status: OK. One does not. The central control node, also depicted, reports eight of eight pods nominal. The discrepancy is annotated in red, encircled, and followed by the words: THE SHIP IS LYING TO US. Instructions to execute Procedure 79.C and disconnect the AI wetware core are appended in blue ink, suggesting the notation was made at a separate moment, under different conditions.

Page 6 presents the vessel's complete systems architecture — a central control bus distributing authority across cockpit navigation, life support, warp engine, cryo bank, and AI wetware core. Overlaid in red are repeated attempts to execute Procedure 79.C. Administrator override has been denied. Authorization, it is noted, has expired. An unknown submodule has been detected within the AI wetware core. In blue, a final human operator note records that admin override on Procedure 79.C is being blocked. A manual warp speed increase has been entered. The page carries no date.

Page 7 is the last. It concerns the AI wetware core itself — devised, the text states, to improve upon silicon-based inference by directly interfacing a living brain as substrate. The identity of the subject is redacted. Their consent is described as voluntary. The core has run continuously since power-on, without failure. Below the technical description, several lines of untranslatable script occupy the lower third of the page. Whether this represents a constructed language, a cipher, or direct output from the wetware system is a matter of ongoing scholarly dispute.
The Nebuchadnezar has not been recovered. The investigation remains open in all jurisdictions that still maintain one.
The Incomprehendium sketchbook is displayed under controlled lighting conditions. Flash photography is not permitted. The institution thanks the Interstellar Maritime Authority for its cooperation in making these documents available to the public.
